Businesses that rely solely on manual processes are particularly vulnerable to issues like Suez Canal blockage in 2021 or the recent transport strikes. But for businesses to remain resilient, they also need regulations to be clearly communicated to them, supported by an understanding of what is happening politically in the world. About half of business owners surveyed said unpredictable geopolitical events were their top concern, highlighting the need for a multi-tiered approach. Reliable technology, yes. But also better support and better communication from experts and management bodies to help companies prepare for change. With the right support, businesses can avoid disruption and maintain their competitive advantage.

What will be the impact of new European policies such as the CSRD and the CSDDD on businesses?

The two directives mark a significant change for global trade. Under the Sustainability Reporting Directive, for example, companies that generate more than €150 million in the EU will have to report on their sustainability practices and impacts across their operations , in general. If your company meets the reporting threshold (for example, a European subsidiary with 250 or more employees), it is essential to establish a good ESG framework and meet reporting deadlines. This comes directly from the European Commission.

The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive is also having a significant impact, requiring companies to examine their entire supply chains for both environmental and human rights. For businesses that are unprepared for these changes, it is important to be proactive. This means building compliance into the business model and working with trusted experts to bring the regulatory and ethical dimensions of what you do up to standard.

What are your long-term priorities at Customs Support? How do you see things evolving in light of increasing regulatory requirements?

So far, we have made significant progress in expanding across the EU, often through mergers and acquisitions. We are now focused on more organic growth, with the aim of providing a comprehensive support network for our customers. Our long-term goal is to ultimately become the central hub for all things customs and trade compliance, enabling businesses to meet all manner of regulatory requirements and challenges without interruption, regardless of the evolution of demand. Whether achieved through digital transformations, direct person-to-person consulting services, or a combination of both, we are here to support seamless operations across multiple borders.

Our vision for customs support is simple: we want to equip every business we support with the tools they need to continually manage the ever-changing landscape of international trade. It’s about giving them the knowledge, expertise and, of course, the confidence they need to thrive.
