MEMPHIS, Tennessee, February 3, 2026 — FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) today announced the implementation of a new autonomous robotic system from Berkshire Gray, Inc., a leader in AI-based robotic solutions that automate supply chain processes and a subsidiary of SoftBank Group. A multi-year collaboration between FedEx and Berkshire Gray created physical AI for safer, smarter logistics, resulting in the Scoop™ robotic package unloader. The Scoop system was designed specifically for automated trailer unloading and will help optimize FedEx operations to make them safer and more efficient.

FedEx continues to prioritize innovation focused on creating solutions that improve team members’ daily workflow and their safety on the job. Unloading trailers containing a wide range of package types has long been one of the most unpredictable and physically demanding tasks in package center operations. Scoop addresses these challenges by providing a continuous flow, processing all package types and providing access to operators when needed.

“Continuing to advance our network with the support of this new physical AI solution from Berkshire Gray reflects our commitment to team member safety, innovation and operational resiliency,” said Kawal Preet, executive vice president, planning, engineering and transformation at FedEx. “By using smart technologies for trailer unloading, we equip our staff with cutting-edge technology, improving safety and operational efficiency, while maintaining the high service standards expected by our customers. »

Next generation robotic unloading
Scoop is powered by physics AI to enable fully autonomous trailer unloading using a bulk handling approach. This revolutionary solution improves employee safety, increases operational efficiency and sets a new standard for automated logistics in highly complex environments.

The main innovations of the system include:

  • Improved security and maintainability: Built on security-first principles, Scoop supports human assistance for exception handling.
  • Continuous flow: Designed to provide consistent inflow, not just to optimize individual parts.
  • Minimal impact on facilities: Designed to be seamlessly integrated into existing FedEx facilities.
  • AI-powered autonomy: The system recognizes a varying combination of packages and makes real-time decisions to safely maneuver inside trailers, completely emptying them at high flow rates before autonomously exiting the trailer.

The pilot is underway and FedEx will field the first Scoop systems later in calendar year 2026.

Strategic collaboration to advance logistics innovation

“Our work with FedEx focuses on providing scalable robotic solutions developed to enhance safety, improve efficiency and reduce maintenance complexity,” said Dave Paratore, CEO of Berkshire Gray. “Bringing Scoop to FedEx demonstrates how robotics can bring significant improvements to real-world logistics operations. »

In 2021, FedEx deployed Berkshire Gray Robotic Product Sorting and Identification (RPSi) Systems to automatically sort small packages that arrive daily and need to be distributed. Shortly after, in 2022, the companies expanded their relationship by announcing they made an agreement for new development activities that will provide broader AI robotic capabilities to help improve the safety and efficiency of FedEx package processing operations globally.
