Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently unveiled an agentic AI solution designed for healthcare providers. Amazon Connect Health can support high-volume administrative tasks such as clinical documentation, medical coding and appointment scheduling, allowing clinicians to spend more time directly delivering care, according to a report. AWS Blog Post.
Amazon Connect Health builds on Amazon Connect, a platform designed to help businesses deliver personalized customer experiences. AWS designed the new solution specifically to meet the needs of healthcare providers, with the ability to understand call context as well as patient preferences. AI can also discern when situations require human intervention and be escalated to a staff member.
In addition to reducing administrative burden, the platform expands access to patients, since the AI agent can respond to requests around the clock. Some providers are already making a difference in care delivery with agentic AI. For example, a health system that handles 3.2 million patient interactions per year saves 1 minute per call using Amazon Connect Health. Subsequently, the system shifted 630 work hours per week from patient verification to direct support.
The Rise of Tailored AI for Healthcare Providers
Amazon Connect Health joins a series of solutions that technology companies and AI providers have introduced this year specifically aimed at meeting the needs of healthcare professionals. AWS’ announcement follows the launch of Claude for Health Anthropic and OpenAI for healthboth of which debuted in January 2026.
Agentic AI, capable of autonomously understanding context, making decisions and taking actions to support goal achievement within a defined context, has the potential to improve patient engagement and clinical workflows while increasing administrative efficiency, according to Microsoft. These solutions go beyond what generative AI assistants can accomplish (understanding natural language and generating content in response to prompts) to independently track complex workflows. For example, agentic AI can retrieve patient data from various systems, analyze it and then compile a report.
These AI tools can help providers overcome common challenges as they seek to deliver high-quality, personalized care. At the JP Morgan Healthcare 2026 conference in January, Kimberly Powell, vice president of healthcare at tech giant Nvidia, described 2025 as “a watershed year for agentic AI” and noted that healthcare providers around the world are realizing that these advanced AI tools can mitigate the effects of the workforce shortage.
Agentic AI Use Cases in Healthcare
The main features of Amazon Connect Health currently include:
- Conversational verification of patient identity (generally available) including real-time electronic health record (EHR) integration
- Appointment management (preview) via natural language voice scheduling, allowing patients to book, reschedule or cancel 24/7, as well as EHR integration and real-time insurance verification capabilities
Here are some other ways agentic AI, in general, can potentially make life easier for clinicians, according to Guide house. Note: This is not an exhaustive list.
- Management of prior authorizationsincluding determining whether prior authorization is necessary, retrieving information from the EHR, completing forms, and submitting and monitoring the status of requests
- Clinical documentation and codingincluding listening, creating structured documentation, applying appropriate coding, and submitting claims
- Coordination of transversal careincluding sending patient reminders, scheduling follow-up appointments, arranging the delivery of home health services, and updating patient portals
