To put it simply: Apple Silicon is incredibly optimized to run local AI models. And the data is clear: people care. Mac Studios are largely exhausted, and Mac mini are impossible to find. There are various reasons for this, such as OpenClaw and other computer agents. But there’s also a group of people who buy high-end Macs with huge swaths of unified memory, which is amazing for running local LLMs.
While I’m sure Apple appreciates the additional hardware sales, I think they could go even further – entering a segment they’ve so far ignored.
Apple could become a server supplier
Apple once flirted with the idea of selling servers, in the form of Xserve. There was also a variant of the Mac Pro 2019 that could fit in a server rack. It’s now done – without direct replacement.
I think now more than ever, there’s a good reason to want to have macOS as a server – and it has to do with AI. People want to have agents who can access their Apple services and Mac applications without using their own computer. This is why so many people buy Mac mini for use as always-on headless devices.
I’m not sure how feasible this is, but if this trend continues, I think it could be plausible to see Apple get into the server business – similar to how providers like AWS operate. Customers could pay Apple a monthly fee to access macOS and Apple Silicon in the cloud.
Apple already has some of the infrastructure for this, with Private cloud computing. These servers are largely underused at the momentuntil Apple prepares its Gemini-optimized Apple Intelligence models.
Either way, Apple could potentially expand further. There’s no denying that it’s lucrative: more than half of Amazon’s profits come from AWS, not purchases.
Conclude
Apple Is Already a Massive Company and iPhone Sales Show It no signs of slowing down. In the world of AI though, if Apple wanted to grow a new part of its business, I think renting compute on Apple Silicon servers running macOS could become a new success. This would certainly save some people from having to buy all the Mac Studios with large amounts of unified memory.
Sure, you can sell people a $4,000 computer one time, or you can make over $200 a month from them for as long as they need cloud computing.
Apple CEO Tim Cook likely to resign from his role in the near futureI could easily see Apple continuing this idea under new management. Especially since John Ternus has experience in computer hardware.
