“The OBI tool, developed in collaboration with IBM, will help energy planners overcome critical challenges related to lack of data to inform energy access and energy transition interventions, and better deliver results for those who need it most.
Predicting urban expansion with IBM’s MUG tool
The Urban Growth Modeling (MUG) AI tool complements OBI.
This open source AI model is adept at predicting potential urban sprawl using a variety of data inputs, including satellite imagery and demographic data.
Initially trained on data from 11 African countries, including Nigeria, Kenya and Malawi, the MUG’s flexible design allows it to be retrained for application in various global contexts, accessible to users around the world.
This sophisticated model highlights not only the application of AI in development planning, but also IBM’s commitment to accessible technology.
The company hopes to integrate this model with OBI to provide a more comprehensive tool for urban planning and energy management.
“At IBM, we are proud to launch solutions that harness the power of artificial intelligence to impact communities around the world,” said John Matogo, head of corporate social responsibility for Africa and the Middle East at IBM.
