Imagine sitting through a two-hour interview where an AI asks you questions about your life, decisions, and opinions, only to create a digital model that behaves like you. This is not a science fiction postulate: Google DeepMind researchers, alongside sociologists and computer scientists, have developed an artificial intelligence system capable of creating eerily precise digital personality replicas.

Dubbed “personality agents,” the technology uses advanced AI to analyze participants’ responses in real time, generating models that can mimic their thought processes, decision-making and reactions with 85% accuracy, according to the researchers. While this may sound like the dawn of digital clones, creators view this innovation as a tool to revolutionize social research rather than venturing into dystopian territory.

The process begins with a two-hour session led by a conversational AI with a user-friendly 2D sprite interface. As participants answer questions, the AI captures their preferences, speech patterns and decision-making tendencies, creating a personality profile. The researchers tested the system on 1,000 participants and say it offers a scalable and cost-effective way to study human behavior.

Traditional sociology relies on large-scale, time-consuming and expensive surveys. Using personality agents, researchers can simulate responses to scenarios without interviewing thousands of people, potentially reducing costs and increasing efficiency in fields such as sociology, marketing, and behavioral studies.

“This is a major advance in understanding human behavior on a large scale,” the research team said.

The potential of personality agents goes far beyond sociology. AI-generated personalities could transform personal assistants, allowing them to intuitively adapt to user needs. Imagine a digital assistant that understands your preferences so well that it predicts what you want before you ask.

The technology could also revolutionize human-robot interactions, paving the way for robots that respond naturally to emotions and social cues. “This could improve not only productivity, but also emotional connections in a future where AI becomes an integral part of human life,” the researchers noted.

Despite its revolutionary potential, this technology raises important ethical questions. How can we ensure consent when creating digital replicas? What safeguards can prevent misuse, for example in targeted advertising or political campaigns?

There’s also the psychological discomfort of knowing that a digital version of oneself could interact with other people outside of one’s control. “The possibility of emotional harm or manipulation cannot be ignored,” experts warn.
