A week later presentation a new personalization tool for its Gemini chatbot, Google LLC today brought the technology to its flagship search engine.
The feature, called Personal Intelligence, is initially available to US users with Google AI Pro and Ultra accounts. Google AI is a subscription offering that brings the company’s most powerful artificial intelligence models to consumers. It also offers some other benefits, including additional cloud storage space.
The version of Personal Intelligence launched last week allows Google’s Gemini Assistant to personalize its responses based on users’ personal data. Consumers can give the chatbot access to this data by connecting it to Gmail and Google Photos. Google says it won’t train its models on files users share with Gemini.
The version of Personal Intelligence that started rolling out today in Google Search works in much the same way. This is part of AI Mode, a feature that was added to the search engine last year. It generates more detailed responses to user prompts than the standard interface.
Under the hood, AI mode uses a technique called query-fan out to generate responses. It breaks each prompt into subtopics and searches them separately with a large number of AI-generated queries. In the future, the technology will be able to extract information not only from the public web, but also from users’ Gmail inboxes and Google Photos libraries.
Google says the upgrade will allow AI Mode to customize several aspects of its quick responses. “If you need a new coat for your next trip, AI Mode could automatically take into account the brands you prefer, along with your flight confirmation in Gmail to identify where and when (Chicago in March),” wrote Robby Stein, vice president of product for Google Search, in a statement. blog post.
Both Personal Intelligence’s broadcast query mechanism and AI Mode are powered by Gemini 3, Google’s latest set of large language models. AI mode routes the most complex user queries to the high-end Gemini 3 Pro algorithm. Simpler queries are handled by the other models in the series, which use less infrastructure.
AI mode personalizes its output based not only on user preferences and files, but also on the types of data contained in a given quick response. If an AI-generated response contains structured numerical information, the feature can display a spreadsheet. It is also capable of generating more complex graphics such as animated simulations of star systems. AI mode data-specific interface customization is powered by a version of Gemini 3 Pro that has been enhanced with third-party tool integrations and error correction features.
There are several ways Google could improve the implementation of personal intelligence in AI mode in the future. The company may add integrations with more services beyond Gmail and Google Photos, including third-party apps. Additionally, it could make the technology accessible to professional users. Developers, for example, could benefit from a version of Personal Intelligence that tailors coding-related search results to the project they’re currently working on.
