In an effort to stay ahead of a growing new technology, Oneida County has established the framework for an artificial intelligence task force, according to a statement from Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente. Jr.

Picente announced the creation of the Artificial Intelligence Task Force during his State of the County address earlier this year, with the intention of conducting responsible assessment and use of artificial intelligence within county government and the broader community.

“This framework ensures that Oneida County approaches artificial intelligence thoughtfully, responsibly and with the public interest first,” Picente said in a statement. “AI has the potential to improve efficiency and service delivery, but it must be implemented with clear safeguards, transparency and accountability. This working group will help us find that balance as we move forward.”

About the AI Working Group

The AITF will play an advisory role and be responsible for assessing the opportunities, risks, operational impacts and ethical considerations associated with AI technologies. His work will focus on improving government operations, supporting economic development, strengthening data governance and protection, preparing the workforce, and improving public understanding of AI.

The AITF will examine the role of AI in county operations, impacts on the private sector and economy, governance and cybersecurity considerations, workforce development and training, and public awareness and education.

His responsibilities will include assessing county readiness, identifying high-value use cases, recommending policies and governance structures, and proposing workforce and community education strategies. The Working Group will not be involved in purchasing decisions or operational implementation.

Members are expected to include approximately 10 representatives from key sectors including information technology, planning, human resources, public safety, ethics, economic and workforce development, education, business and community advocacy, as well as private sector technology expertise.

The AITF will meet at least once a month and may create sub-working groups if necessary.

Initial deliverables are expected within three to four months and will include an AI readiness assessment and a preliminary analysis of opportunities and risks. Final policy and governance recommendations are expected within eight to 12 months, at which time the county executive can determine whether to continue the task force as a permanent advisory body.

Additional details regarding the composition of the working group and meeting times will be announced when the committee is finalized.
