A $30 million academic gift for a new artificial intelligence center is awarded to Binghamton University.
According to a release from Governor Kathy Hochul, this is the largest academic gift in Binghamton University’s history and will be used to create the Center for AI Accountability and Research, the first-ever independent AI research center at a public university in the nation.
The $30 million will be combined with a $25 million research capital investment from SUNY. The center will be the first hub for the scientific and technical creation of responsible, reproducible and transparent artificial intelligence.
The center’s goal is to be the nation’s only public academic center for fundamental technical research into the safety, security, and transparency of artificial intelligence models and systems to ensure that artificial intelligence serves the public good.
University officials will begin seeking members to join their team to further their research mission, translate findings into real-world practice, and maximize available funding for the center.
