Cursor AI Startup in Talks for Major Funding Round of Over $2 Billion at $50 Billion Valuation – News & Stats

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, the AI ​​coding startup Cursor is in discussions to obtain a significant new investment. The four-year-old company is reportedly close to raising at least $2 billion in new capital.

Existing investors Thrive and Andreessen Horowitz are expected to lead the financing at a valuation of fifty billion dollars before the new capital is added. Battery companies is a potential new participant and strategic investor Nvidia should also contribute to this.

Although the round is described as oversubscribed, the final terms are not yet set and could be adjusted. If completed, this financing would represent an almost doubling of the company’s valuation compared to six months previously.

Despite competition from other AI coding products, Cursor’s revenue would grow rapidly. The company projects that it will reach annualized revenue above six billion dollars by the end of 2026, which would mean a tripling of its annualized revenue in less than a year. Its annualized revenue was two billion dollars earlier this year.

After previously operating with negative gross margins, the company has recently achieved slight overall profitability in terms of gross margin. This change is attributed to the launch of its own Composer model last November and the use of less expensive external models. The company’s sales to large enterprises are now profitable on a gross margin basis, although individual developer accounts would remain unprofitable.

Reducing reliance on external providers of AI models is part of a strategic effort to mitigate competitive threats from those same providers. The startup, initially named Anysphere, was created in 2022 by a group of MIT students.
