The United States is at the forefront of development artificial intelligence technologysurpassing China in research and other important measures of AI innovation, according to an index recently released by Stanford University.

There is no foolproof way to rank global AI leadership, but Stanford researchers have attempted to measure the “dynamics” of the AI industry across various dimensions, from the scale of research and investments to how technology is used responsibly to prevent harm.

“The gap is actually growing” between the United States and China, said computer scientist Ray Perrault, director of the steering committee that runs Stanford’s AI Index. “The United States invests a lot more, at least in terms of creating and financing businesses. »

The University of California’s Institute for Human-Centered AI – which has ties to Silicon Valley’s tech industry – released the report on Thursday as government AI officials of the United States and several allies met in San Francisco this week to compare notes on AI security measures.

Here are the countries in the top 10:

UNITED STATES

The United States holds the top spot on Stanford’s list and has consistently held that position since 2018, when it overtook China. It has far surpassed China in terms of private investment in AI, which reached $67.2 billion in the United States last year, compared to $7.8 billion in China, according to the report. It is also a leader in publishing responsible AI research. It’s no surprise that the home of commercial AI powerhouses like Google and Meta, as well as newcomers like OpenAI and Anthropic, has produced many notable AI models that have influenced the way the technology is developed and applied. The United States also gets some points for passing a number of AI-related laws, although Congress still has to adopt any general regulations on AI.

China

China has applied for far more patents than any other country regarding generative AI, according to the United Nations intellectual property agency. said earlier this year. The Stanford researchers took this as a measure of China’s strong growth in AI innovation, but not enough to lead the pack. Still, the report states that “China’s emphasis on developing cutting-edge AI technologies and increasing its R&D investments has positioned it as a major AI power.” Chinese universities have produced a large number of AI-related research publications and business leaders are developing notable AI models, such as Baidu and its chatbot Ernie.

United Kingdom

Coming in third is the UK, which also ranks among the best in research and development and educational infrastructure thanks to its top IT universities that produce a skilled AI workforce. This is also where DeepMind, Google’s AI subsidiary, is located, whose co-founder recently won a Nobel Prize; and “had more mentions of AI in parliamentary debates” than any other country. Last year the UK hosted the first international summit on AI security.

India

Behind the UK is India, thanks to a “strong AI research community”, improvements in AI-related economic investment and vigorous public discourse on AI on social media , according to the report.

United Arab Emirates

The UAE’s deliberate focus on AI appears to have paid off as the Middle Eastern country secures fifth place. It was one of the leading sites for AI investment. Microsoft announced earlier this year that it would invest $1.5 billion in UAE-based technology company G42which is overseen by the country’s powerful national security adviser. Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, G42 operates data centers and has built what is considered the world’s first Arabic-language AI model, known as Jais.

The rest of the top 10

The top 10 is completed by France, in 6th place, followed by South Korea, Germany, Japan and Singapore. France, home to the dynamic AI startup Mistral, ranks high on AI policy and governance. Germany and Germany are part of the European Union. a radical new law on AI which places safeguards on a range of AI applications based on their level of risk. The EU also follows the United States in make a plan develop semiconductor production within the bloc.
