Ahmedabad: Gujarat will launch the Indian AI Research Organization (IAIRO) at GIFT City on January 1, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said on Monday. The state will become the first in the country to create a national artificial intelligence research institution on a public-private partnership (PPP) model.The Chief Minister gave in-principle approval to establish IAIRO as a tripartite partnership involving the Government of Gujarat, Government of India and industry.
Officials said the IAIRO will be operationalized as a special purpose vehicle in GIFT City and will be incorporated as a non-profit entity under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. The proposed outlay for the first five years is around Rs 300 crore, with equal contributions of 33.33 per cent each from the state government, the Center and private partners. The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) will be the lead private partner and is expected to contribute Rs 25 crore in 2025-26. The IPA represents 23 major national pharmaceutical companies, including Cipla, Torrent Pharma and Sun Pharma, among others. According to a state government statement, the administration has also established an AI task force to accelerate sustainable development by improving the quality of life of many people through AI-based improvements in healthcare, education, agriculture and other services. To go further in this direction, IAIRO is considered a multidisciplinary hub for AI, he says. IAIRO’s core activities will include advanced research and development, development of AI-based products and solutions, and collaboration between academic institutions, industries, startups and government.IAIRO will also focus on intellectual property, capacity building and policy-oriented research. It will operate under a hybrid compute model, integrating on-premises GPU infrastructure, as well as domestic platforms such as IndiaAI Cloud, the statement said.
