Casey Ross covers the use of artificial intelligence in medicine and its underlying issues of security, equity, and privacy.

A proposal from the Trump administration deregulate artificial intelligence products used in health care would shift the burden of approving these tools to health systems that would have to work harder to prove the technology is trustworthy, experts said.

In documents Released Monday evening, the federal agency that regulates health information technology proposed eliminating requirements that software vendors disclose how AI tools are developed and evaluated.

If implemented as written, the proposal would mean that healthcare providers using AI products would have to push technology providers to provide this information to ensure the tools are safe and effective for use on their patient populations. Obtaining these details is especially important to compare available products and ensure they are implemented fairly and appropriately.
